Five Tips to Improve Your Dancing.
Improving our dancing is a common goal that we all share. We are all self conscious about doing it right and wanting to look good while doing it. Whilst there is no quick fix to make us look amazing immediately there are a few things we can do to help us improve.
1) Practice Between Private Lessons: Forgetting to practice between our private lessons isn’t beneficial to building and improving our fundamental dance skills. Coming to group lessons and socials are a perfect opportunity for us to practice what your teacher has been working on in your lessons. Even practicing in small five or ten minute increments a day can improve our dancing. Practice your steps while you watch T.V or while you brush your teeth. Every little bit helps.
3) Use the Mirror or Recordings: Most people don’t enjoy watching themselves dance, as we are often our own harshest critic. But mirrors and recordings are helpful tools to show us what could need improving. When given the chance try to practice in the mirror to improve lines, posture and more.
5) Actively Participate: Sometimes in our lessons we can go into ‘autopilot’ mode and dance through the movements. To help improve our dancing we want to be actively participating and be present when we dance. Letting the energy travel through the body to the ends of our fingertips. Have check-in moments while we dance (like when you face a particular part of the dance studio or ever few counts in the music) to make sure everything is remaining active.
Some of these things may seem like common sense but, we may at times forget about them. Even professional dancers take their time, record their progress, make plans, practice and actively push themselves when they dance which helps them to improve. So the next time you’re dancing, keep these things in your mind and watch your dancing improve.
